“The best camera is the one you have with you.”

If there is one thing that I’ve learned over the past decade, it’s to always carry a camera with me. Thankfully, the advent of the smartphone has made this incredibly easy. The reason I implore you to bring such a tool with you wherever you go is to prepare yourself for those once-in-a-lifetime moments that can happen any time, any place.

I have used photography and videography as means to document my life, and the past couple of years have led me down a path of reliving my past through this footage. I grew up carrying a Sony MHS-TS20 Bloggie pocket camera (pictured above). It was my first “real” camera and spent the better part of six years in the right pocket of my jeans. That camera and I saw the world through the eyes of a teenager, a world that was rapidly changing as technology exploded.
One incredible tool, which I’ll discuss in another future post, is Google Photos. This is a cloud-based solution for storing all of the photos and videos from my phone and whatever else I choose to upload. This platform has helped me build a digital timeline of the last five years of my life and I’m often lost in looking through old pictures, remembering time times when life was simpler. Having a library of media is one thing. Being able to find those shots easily is another, something which Google Photos has done really well.
The showreel above illustrates my video skills as they were at the end of 2020. I have come a long way since I started playing with a camera 11 years ago and I still have a lot to learn. I’d like to see this blog as a learning experience for both of us. As a place to practice my passion, I will share the tricks I learn and how they can develop deeper meaning to your work. This blog will be focused on capturing what I like to call renown moments through photos and video.
As the Swiss photographer Robert Frank said, “There is one thing the photo must contain – the humanity of the moment.”
